Beyond the surface. "Sometimes people look at someone else's financial situation or their home's exterior and don't see beyond that. I think it's important to look deeper into a person. There are other needs the Mary Kay opportunity can fill beyond financial," says Independent National Sales Director Tammy Crayk. Tammy is the perfect example. On the outside, she appeared to have everything: money, two children, a lovely home and a wonderful husband. But on the inside, she discovered she needed more.

"My Mary Kay business helped me find success outside of being a stay-at-home mother. The opportunity to promote myself excited me and propelled me into accomplishing things. That's what it's all about," says Tammy who, in nine short years, grew to become the No. 1 Independent Sales Director in the Company before becoming an National SalesDirector.

She's learned many lessons along the way and says that her Mary Kay business has "reshaped" her outlook on life. "I've learned that there's good in everyone and to look deeper than the surface. Now, I see us all as unique and worthy. There's so much we can learn from one another."

Much of Tammy's success is due to her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence, two traits she gleaned from her parents. "My parents didn't tolerate mediocrity. If I was an 'A' student, a 'B' wasn't good enough. They expected the best and didn't tolerate a second-best job," says Tammy, who is grateful for the chance to work at home so she can pass along those ideals to her own children.

"My kids understand what it means to work to the last minute and never give up - to run to the finish line and do the best you can. That's a priceless lesson for kids that they can't learn if you're working in a downtown office building instead of a home office every day. My kids believe this lesson because of my Mary Kay business. I've passed it on to them."

And Tammy plans to be around to pass it on to her great-granddaughter - the philosophy of Mary Kay Ash. "I want to keep that alive!"
